Bernd Papenkort is Regional Coordinator of Oxford Leadership Academy™ in the Balkans.

He is a former senior military officer with a top training background in the German General Staff and the British Army Staff College. He held command functions within national and multinational military formations in peace support operations with NATO and the UN, and was later Director for Security Policy at the German Armed Forces General Staff College.

Bernd holds a Master Degree in Business and Management from the University of Darmstadt.

During his career he has worked at the political - military interface in national government institutions and international organisations. His team in NATO prepared the first phase of NATO's Partnership for Peace activities. He was then engaged in the design and implementation of NATO/ UN peace support operations in the Balkans and had senior level functions as Military Advisor to the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina and as Senior Military Advisor to the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in BiH.

In the course of his career, he has gained manifold experiences in leadership at all levels of command, including international multidisciplinary policy design and decision making within national parliaments and international organisations. He has an outstanding expertise in developing aims and organisational concepts for new and large international efforts and to ensure the alignment of people and strategy in complex multinational operations. He is now using this expertise to conduct high level leadership coaching and training for key public opinion makers in politics, governments and business.

He has worked with international institutions such as the UN, NATO and the EU. He has been engaged, among others, by the Folke Bernadotte Academy Sweden, the Hebrew University Jerusalem Israel, WISCOMP Foundation for Universal Responsibility New Delhi, Management Centre Turkey/Middle East Managment Centre Dubai and the Oxford Leadership Academy UK. He has worked with staff from international companies such as Nokia Siemens Network, DaimlerChrysler, Coca Cola, Telekom, EADS, GRC Dubai UAE, and other companies in South East Europe.

He believes that in this time of rapid transition all leaders and organisations at various levels need

  • to realize and engage in a changing world order
  • to see opportunities in adversity - they must attain the courage to lead
  • to structure the required change processes in their organisations - they must ensure alignment of people with strategy by using appropriate tools, processes and strategies.

Bernd offers consulting, coaching and training in the areas of Leadership, Change Managment and Strategic Synchronisation.

He is a visiting professor for security policy and practical management issues at various universities in South East Europe. He is married and has 2 daughters.
